Creating a Team
Dragon Boat teams consist of 20 paddlers - a minimum of 8 from each gender is required - a trained steer-person, provided by the Festival, and a drummer, who keeps the beat of the stroke. The general consensus is that the lighter in weight the drummer is, the better it is for the team. Please note the drummer must be able to sit in the drummer seat with their feet firmly placed on the floor. Teams should also consider having alternate team members who may be substituted into races at any time throughout the day.
Team Registration Fee
Before April 14th: $1200+HST ($1380)
After April 14th: $1300+HST ($1495)
Included with your team registration fee:
- Two guaranteed races at the Manulife Dragon Boat Festival
- Two 1-hour long practices in the two weeks leading up to the Festival
- All necessary equipment - boat, paddles, PFDs
- Trained coach for all races and practices
A representative from each team should also be selected to act as the team captain. The captain's role is to encourage team recruitment and share information in the months and weeks leading up to the event. Team Captain information sessions will be held in the 3rd Floor Classroom at Sport Nova Scotia (5516 Spring Garden Rd, Halifax) prior to the Festival.
The first meeting will offer team captains all the information they need to help their team prepare for the event. The second meeting will provide captains with important up-to-date event details such as competition details, site layout, amenities, and information about entertainment and other off-water activities.

Team Equipment & Practices
The Manulife Dragon Boat Festival provides all teams with access to a dragon boat, all necessary equipment, personal floatation devices, and a qualified steer person for practices and on event day. Two practice sessions - run by a trained coach - are included in the registration fee and can be scheduled in advance of the event. Additional practices may be available for an additional cost. The practice sessions will be held at Graham's Grove, right across the street from the Braemar Superstore in Dartmouth. Click here for a map.
Each participant is required to fill out a waiver form prior to entering the boat (for both practices or event day). To receive an electronic copy of the waiver, please click here.
All Dragon Boat participants commit to collecting pledges in advance of the event. In order to ensure that the event is able to contribute significantly to the Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund we require that each participant collect a minimum of $100 in pledges. All those submitting pledges of at least $100 will receive an official Manulife Dragon Boat Festival prize. Additional prizes will be awarded to participants who raise even more pledges. The top team and individual fundraisers will receive special grand prizes.
